Grima vacates coaching chair at Unley

Sturt has opted not to renew the contract of senior coach Nathan Grima after his two seasons at Unley. 

After guiding the Double Blues into the Elimination Final in his first season in charge last year, the Central District premiership defender was unable to keep his side in the major round this season.

Finishing in sixth place with a 5-9 win-loss record, Sturt has undergone immense change with its senior list under Grima’s stay, with the likes of Jack Oatey Medallists Fraser Evans and Jack Stephens retiring, along with premiership midfielder Aidan Riley.

Sturt President Jason Kilic said it had been a difficult decision not to extend Grima’s two-year contract.

“This year (2020), for obvious reasons, has been tough on everyone,” Kilic said.

“Our results have been disappointing finishing sixth on the ladder.

“However, 16 players made their league debut in 2020 and we believe along with quality recruiting this will set up the Club to play finals football next season.

“We wish Nathan and his family all the very best and thank him for his service to Sturt Football Club.”

Grima, who finishes with a 16-16 win-loss record in his two seasons at Oxford Terrace, says he is well established for his next opportunity in football.

“At the end of day I signed a 2-year contract”, said Grima.

“It has been a difficult season and we did not get the results we wanted.

“I believe I have grown in my role as Senior Coach and look forward to the next opportunity in football.

“I leave having made some great relationships especially with the players and wish Sturt nothing but the best.”
