Round 11 SANFL Snapshot – Sunday

Sturt snapped a five-year drought at Alberton when it produced its best performance of the season to trump Port Adelaide by 41 points.

Searching for their first win at Queen Street since Round 11 of 2016, the Double Blues looked in control of the contest after kicking the final two goals of the opening term.

With Tom Lewis, Abe Davis and James Battersby leading the way in the clearances, the visitors led at every change as they also dictated the tempo of the match with poised ball movement from the back half.

Reliable defenders Will Coomblas and Sam Wundke took several pivotal marks to stem the tide while premiership forward Josh Hone was a constant threat with his sublime crumbing and finishing skills.

Hone finished with three goals to go with his 17 disposals and six marks while Lewis found plenty of the ball to tally 26 possessions, six tackles and five clearances.

Davis got further up the ground to collect 25 disposals, eight tackles, eight clearances and a goal as emerging midfielder Adam Trenorden displayed encouraging signs with two goals from his 13 disposals.

Port gave itself a sniff when livewire forward Dylan Williams booted one of his six goals just 48 seconds into the third term, trimming the margin back to 22 points.

Williams’ fourth major then cut the deficit to just 16 points, seven minutes in but any hopes of a revival were short-lived as Sturt then banged on the next four goals in succession to establish at 40-point lead nearing time-on.

Left-footed Williams played a virtual lone hand in attack for the Magpies, kicking six of his team’s seven goals for the afternoon as he put his hand up to potentially make his AFL debut next week.

The classy-mover produced a candidate for Channel 7 Goal of the Week when he gathered, dodged around his opponent and kicked truly on the run from 35m, featured in the clip below.

Aside from Williams, Port had Sam Mayes chalk up 27 disposals, 11 tackles and six clearances while former Roosters Matt Appleton and boyd Woodcock each found 22.
