SANFL’s Best Indigenous Goals

To celebrate SANFL’s Indigenous Round this weekend, ZAC MILBANK has selected his favourite goals kicked by the current crop of stars playing in the Statewide Super League.

What a stage to produce this stunning goal. Glenelg needed a steadier during the third term so Marlon Motlop tapped the ball toward the boundary, baulked around Port defender Tom Corcoran and finished with a checkside kick. It was a major statement in the 2019 SANFL Grand Final.

The 2019 Channel 7 Goal of the Year was an illustration of pure instinct from Dom Barry. Waiting for the ball to sit up nicely, Barry used his favoured left foot to curl it through without touching it by hand. Stunning effort on a challenging angle.

Eagles forward Tyson Stengle has been treating SANFL fans to many classy finishes in 2021 but this was the pick of the bunch so far. Not only did he create the initial contest with a spoil, he recovered to pounce on the loose ball before spinning in spectacular fashion. The finish on the run became a mere formality.

North’s Frank Szekely produced this stunning contender for 2020 Channel 7 Goal of the Year when he hit the contest at pace, steadied and launched a checkside finish from 30m out. A very difficult kick to control while running at full speed.

North’s Kym LeBois didn’t let the fact he is a left-footer fuss him when he curled this goal through from the boundary line. On the toughest of angles, the Roosters’ livewire managed to thread the needle from long range.

Playing for Port Adelaide in 2017, North’s Robbie Young came up with this contender for Goal of the Year against Norwood. Using his body nicely, he is able to edge opponent Jace Bode under the ball, gather, handball into his own path while being tackled, then snap truly from a tough angle. Brilliance.

Boasting a lethal left-foot kick, West’s Ken Karpany put this on display in Round 1 this year against Glenelg. After intercepting a handball, Karpany let fly from a tough angle 45m out….the ball sailed through much to the delight of Bloods fans.

South Adelaide’s Hayden Sampson caught the eye in Round 9 this year when he intercepted a defensive pass from the Bloods before producing a lovely checkside finish from a tight angle, 20m out. The Panthers’ young star is quickly developing a reputation for being a smooth-mover and this was certainly no exception.
