Country Footy Wrap – Week 13

The annual Schubert-Rosenberg Cup celebrates the grand service of two long-standing administrators for the Angaston and Nuriootpa football clubs – former Panthers’ secretary Anthony “Schuby” Schubert and the late Peter Rosenberg from Nuriootpa.

Played at Angaston Oval last Saturday, the hosts were more accurate in the first half with a handy 15 point lead at half-time. The Panthers went on to enjoy a comfortable 26-point triumph, 13.8 (86) to 8.12 (60).

Local junior Matthew Blenkiron was outstanding in the key defensive post, as were fellow backmen Tom Ryan, Jayden Antonie and skipper Jack Miles.

Former Port Adelaide 200-game leader Steve Summerton kicked three goals for Angaston and was high among the best players, as was young talent Dylan Tuckwell.

Ryder Eberhard and Marc Borholm, along with Antonie kicked two goals each for the Panthers.

Aseri “Bobby” Raikiwasa was the Nuriootpa Rovers’ best followed by Carlson Clark, Brett Thiele and Jackson Baldwin. Tim Dimasi continued his fine run of form and Aaron Laverty was industrious. Big key forward Sam Gordon kicked three goals for the Tigers.

After being held kickless the week before, Josh Trembath produced an outstanding performance up forward for the Tanunda Magpies as they travelled down to Williamstown Oval and defeated Barossa Districts by a handsome 76-point margin.

Along with Trembath’s seven goal-haul, small defender Aron Fechner, all-round athlete Lachlan Agars, Andrew ‘AJ ‘Prior, Matthew Westhoff and Luke Snowden all had a telling impact in this victory.

Best for the Bulldogs was enigmatic big man Jayden Goodfellow.

Alex Stone, Ben Cummings, the dynamic Ryan Watson and skipper Brae McConnell in defence were also serviceable for the Doggies.

After losing the first seven games of the season, Gawler Central have bounced back in style over the past three rounds to collect consecutive victories.

This latest win was the biggest scalp of the season so far, defeating crosstown rivals South Gawler Lions by 40 points.

“We had been playing some good footy and with leaders playing well our younger guys are stepping up,” said Central Coach Matt Whelan.

“We certainly gained confidence from our first win, and the belief has grown. We do play a high-pressure game and when we get it right, it stacks up well.

“Andrew Wright has been super for us and Sean Baker is a quality footballer and person, I reckon he’s been ‘best on’ in every game he’s played.

“Our ruck duo, Joe Bottin and Tyson Duffield have really improved and now win a lot of duals.

“Up forward Brad Mercer is important, he just doesn’t waste a touch.”

Dominating from the outset the Tigers were 29 points up at half-time after a compelling first half.

Led by best on ground Sean Baker, who also slotted three goals, the Tigers were irresistible.

Other strong performers for Gawler Central included Cameron Reynolds, key position player Corey Solly, Jono Schultz, goal-kicking ‘super-boot’ Brad Mercer who finished with five goals and big man Joey Bottin.

In what was one of South Gawler’s most lacklustre efforts for the year, better players included Jackson Dare, Indigenous talent Josh Wittwer and Brodie Hudson in ruck.

And to add to the Lion’s pain, key player Patrick White was unfortunately stretchered from the ground after a serious injury to his knee.

In the upset of round 12, the Kapunda Bombers totally out-classed an injury-riddled Freeling side after half-time, winning by 10 goals.

In his best game in Bombers colours, Jay Meaney stood up, along with unique 183cm-ruckman Adam Turrell and the lightning quick Joey Brown.

The Bombers’ strong marking utility, Matthew Stent, kicked three goals, along with Justin Zanandrea and Brad Prior.

Skipper Max Neville and in his return game Sam Pratt were also impressed, while 17-year-old Wyatt Ryan in his A grade debut kicked two goals.

Better performers for the Redlegs included Travis Muster, Josh Hand with three goals Sam Daff, ruckman Adam Cockshell and teenager Austin Poulton.

The four-team Broken Hill competition has been around since the 1880s and over the past 10 years South Broken Hill has played in all grand finals, winning five of them including the last pair.

On Saturday, the game finished in tie after South kick the final three goals of the game, the scoreboard reading 9.7 (61) each in this clash with the West Robins.
West Broken Hill had a 31-point lead at half-time, after kicking six goals to three in the opening term and two more unanswered majors in the second quarter.

Better players for South included Jordan Johns, the son of Peter (a former SA Country state player from the 1980s),  Mark Purcell (who will play for Northern Zone in the Country Football Championships this weekend), Madden Paul, Riley Schorn, Adam Slattery and Brendan Heinjus.

Cody Schorn kicked three vital goals for the Roos.

For the mighty “Cock Robins” young Michael Andruszkiewicz was their best, followed by Greg Conway and Nathan Greenshields.

Thomas Rowe kicked two goals and was a strong contributor as well, as were Hagen Grose and Ty Andrews.
In the other contest, the North Bulldogs had a one-sided victory over the struggling Central Broken Hill Magpies.

Curtis Jelbert kicked a round-high 12 goals while Jayden Kelly helped himself to four and Anthony Henderson chimed in with three majors in a total score of 27.22 (184) to 1.2 (8).

Ed Morgan, Trent Barraclough and Tyler McInnes were also strong contributors for the Bulldogs.

Cooper Oates kicked the Magpies only goal in the final term, while better players included Josh Hanford, Rhian Curtis, Shaun Woodhall, Jason Masclet and Evan Ferguson in his first game.

Waikerie continued its outstanding undefeated season with a big 127-point win over Loxton North in an away game.

Tristan Geehman was best on ground followed by Tommy-Lee Russo and Billy Cameron, while big forward Daniel Nobes continued his great form up forward. Nobes kicked eight goals in this game, bringing his season tally to 85 after 10 rounds.

Tommy Truscott kicked three goals, as did Geehman. Matthew Spencely and Mitchell White both helped out with a brace.

Joel Worsfold was the Cats’ best, followed by Matthew Hampel and Justin Proud. Michael Scott and Josh Voigt were serviceable while Daniel Proud kicked two of Loxton North’s three goals.

The Renmark Rovers travelled to Berri and defeated the Demons by a comfortable 52-point margin.

Matt Woolford was best for the Rovers followed by Timmy Woolford with three goals. Jacob Neary, Tomas Austin, Harrison Brown and former Mundulla lad Grady Obst were also strong contributors.

Best for Berri was former SANFL reserves Magarey Medalist from 2014 Luke Teasdale followed by Michael Voigt, veteran defender Peter Safralidis, Tyson Renshaw and Adam Thomson who kicked three of his team’s five goals.

The third match in round 10 of the RFL was also a one-sided affair at the Lakeside Oval, with Barmera-Monash defeating the Loxton Tigers by 73 points.

Eddie O’Connor was the Roos’ best followed by Jake Smith and Adam Maschotta.

Ashley Kemp, Taso Bantolas and Matthew Min were also solid contributors while Jake Gilgen kicks seven goals in his best performance statistically for the year.

Mark Thiele was the Tiger’s leading player, closely followed by the extraverted Ben Yeomans and Raphael Liddle.
