Peter Argent’s Country Footy Rap – Week 12, Representative weekend, June 29

Despite the inclement conditions, a captivating game was played between Central Yorke Cougars and the Kadina Bloodhounds at Maitland Oval last Saturday in round 12 of the Yorke Peninsula Football League.

Only two points separated the combatants at half-time, and after a violent storm cell hit in the third quarter, Kadina took a 13-point lead into the final term.

A brilliant goal scored by Zac Bates started the Cougars charge in the last quarter, followed by Sam Ferguson’s first. Ruckman Luke Trenorden then kicked two brilliant goals to give the hosts what proved to be a match-winning lead in the end.

This was before 16-year-old Kadina talent Matthew Borlace replied to give the Bloodhounds a sniff at victory, but they fell seven points short in a wonderful game played in trying conditions.

Trenorden in ruck was outstanding while Bates, with his two goals, and captain Will Baker also had a telling impact on the contest.

Ciaran Hollingworth-Hughes, young Jacob Davies and Reuben Parker also had their moments in what was the Cougars’ second win and three weeks.

“We weren’t able to collect a victory in round one, but have enjoyed a couple of team lifting wins in the past three weeks,” Cougars coach Dale Hobbs explained.

“We are going through a rebuild at the moment.

“There was a real belief at three quarter time and we readjusted in the last quarter to play wet weather footy.

“It was certainly our wettest day for the year and it was huge in the (change) rooms after the game.

“The first win was a bit of a relief, but this was satisfying.”

For the Bloodhounds, Bryce Woolard was their best, followed by second generation Bloodhound and former SANFL Eagles league player Giles Ellis.  Nick Rawson and Jason Fagg were also important in a gallant Kadina side.

Daniel Mcdonald kicked three goals, while Mitchell Steer and Alex East also deserved a mention for their individual performances in tough conditions.

At Edithburgh Oval, the Southern Eagles enjoyed a good win over the previously undefeated Paskeville Magpies by 22 points in a low-scoring affair.

The Southern Eagles were two goals in front at half-time and won 8.6 (54) to 4.8 (32).

For the tri-coloured Eagles, Daniel Redden was best on ground followed by Matthew Barlow and Michael Eichner.

Scott Mumford kicked three important goals while dual sporting talent Nathan Allen, Nik Seccafien and Teejay Halkias were also strong contributors.

Sam Sanders kicked two of the Magpies’ four goals while former state country captain Tyson Wait was the Magpies’ best, along with Aidan Smith.

Brodie Paige, Glenn Moulders and long-term representative footballer Abraham Hefland all played their roles.

At Stansbury oval the CMS Crows were too good for the Ardrossan Kangaroos.

Ardrossan didn’t help their cause, kicking 13 behinds in the first half, including 1.8 in the second quarter.

The Crows then kicked five unanswered goals in the third quarter and went on to win the game by 54 points.

Tom Babidge was best-on-ground and also kicked three goals, while Jarryn Male and Josh Hoile also had telling impacts on the contest.

Former Prince Alfred College First XI cricket captain and First XVIII footballer Lachlan Pointon kicked two goals and was high in the best players, along with Liam Cocks. Port Adelaide Magpies squad member Ben Edwards also played his role.

Better players for the Ardrossan Kangaroos included Travis McIntyre, Stephen Wellington and Matthew Easther.

The Wallaroo Bulldogs at home were 20-point winners over the Bute Roosters on the back of a four-goal third quarter.

Although keeping the Bulldogs scoreless in the last term, Bute was only able to kick 1.4.

The strong-marking veteran Sam Jordan was among the best for the Doggies, followed by Dylan Boundy and Luke Webb.  Nathan Murphy, Chris Martin (with two goals) and Jordan Owen also were solid.

Henry Trenorden again led the way for the beaten Roosters, having been their best in three of his past four games, followed by Sam Taylor and Luke McCauley. Seth Nassif contributed with his two goals for Bute.

The Western Border League clash of the round between North and West Gambier was a battle for top spot.

West, who kicked the only goal of the first quarter, took a 23-point advantage into the long interval after booting four goals to one in the second. They continued to lead all the way, eventually winning by 15 points, 9.6 (60) to 6.9 (45).

Charlie Schultz was the Tigers’ outstanding performer followed by Jordan Hollitt and Brett Kennedy.  Declan Kenny, accomplished SA Outbacks cricketer Nick Mcinerney and Fraser Marshall performed admirably.

Mick Minuzzo was the Kangaroos’ best along with Dwayne Phillips and Lawrie Bradley-Brown.

Todd Lewis and Jess Pfitzner caught the eye, while Ben Papps kicked a match-high three goals for the vanquished.

Meanwhile, in the contest between third and fourth on the ladder at McDonald Park, East Gambier claimed a handy 11-point win over the Casterton Sandford Cats.

The Bulldogs were five points up at half-time but booted four goals to one in the third term, holding on to win 10.11 (71) to 9.6 (60).

Grady Janeway was East Gambier’s best followed by Shem Balshaw and Jack Dawe.

Former Port Adelaide Magpies footballer Matthew Scanlan kicked three goals while Tully Balshaw, Jake McKeon and Mark Kieselbach also made the best players list.

Dylan Ayton, with three goals, and Will Macdonald were the Cats’ best followed by Tommy Sullivan and Matthew Kelly.

At the lower end of the ladder, the South Gambier Demons defeated last year’s premiers, Millicent, by four goals in a tough and low-scoring affair, 6.8 (44) to 2.8 (20).

Bronson Saffin was the Demons’ best followed by Brent Howard and Nick Jenken. Taylor Saffin and Jake Tentye and also had their moments, while wearing the number 87 jumper was Emerson Marks – the only multiple goal kicker in the match with two majors.

For the Saints, Dylan Tincknell was best followed by Joe Walker and Jaden Grosser.

Brady Gibbs, Kade Varcoe and Jonah Grimes also fought hard in this game at McLaughlin Park in Millicent.

The top of the table Pinnaroo side travelled to Murrayville and defeated the Bulldogs by 61 points, despite looking in trouble at half-time when they found themselves three points behind.

But from there on it was one-way traffic for the Suparoos who kicked nine unanswered goals in the second half to win 15.9 (99) to 5.5 (35).

Alex Keough was outstanding for the Suparoos, as was Christopher Shawcross and Nick Hyde.

Sam Jordan booted six goals, while Kyle Wildman helped himself to five.

Murrayville’s Jake McCreery was their best followed by Nick Bailey, Bradley Young and teenager Adam Dorward. Nathan Wright-Bramfit kicked three of the Bulldogs’ five goals.

The Karoonda Districts Magpies Football Club made short work of the Peake Lions at Peake Oval.

With a comfortable 47-point lead at half-time, the Magpies went on to win by a massive 118-point margin.

Jarrad Woodward starred for the Magpies with 12 goals and a best-on-ground display, while Nathan Brown, Tyler Wagner and Lachlan Hentschke also stood out in this one-sided affair. Young talent Shane Peach also kicked three goals, as did Dylan Schmidt.

Peake’s best was Dan Staite, followed by Ryan Johnston and Matthew Whitford, while Corey White and Luke Sparks were handy as well.

Lameroo travelled down to Tintinara Oval and defeated the Border Downs/Tintinara Crows by five goals.

Roly Boon kicked three goals in the win, while Taylor Angel, the Hawks’ in-form player of the past month, was their best, followed by Mitchell Dalwitz, Harry Fromm and Andrew Hunt.

For BDT, Jarran Crabb was a leading performer, followed by former West Adelaide footballer Alexander Stidiford and teenagers Cooper Anderson and Nick Croser.
