One of SANFL’s longest serving volunteers, Glenelg timekeeper Bill Holst, has passed away. He was aged 83.
The Tigers’ League timekeeper for more than 40 years, Holst was awarded Glenelg Life Membership in 1991 for his outstanding dedication to the club.
Holst began as timekeeper in Glenelg’s junior grades in 1973. In League ranks, between 1976 and 2018, Holst was timekeeper for 938 premiership games for his beloved Tigers – he only missed a handful of games in that time in 1998 due to heart surgery.
Glenelg has played 1893 League Premiership games in its 98-year history, which means Holst was just short of officiating at half the games the Tigers have ever played. The Bays also played 73 Escort Cup, Foundation Cup, Wills Cup and Fosters Cup night games between 1976-93, so that incredibly lifts his tally to more than 1000 games.
