A gutsy Glenelg refused to be broken as it earned a hard-fought 19-point win against a persistent Woodville-West Torrens at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval. 

Despite enduring a goalless second quarter and the margin not being greater than nine points for the majority of the match, the Bays eventually shrugged off the Eagles in the final 20 minutes to record their 11th consecutive victory.

With Matthew Snook outstanding to be named the Coles Values Player in the muddy conditions, Glenelg slammed on 5.2 in the fourth quarter, including the last three of the game.

Classy Eagle Tyson Stengle, featured in the clip below, levelled the scores when he nailed a checkside set shot from the boundary 12 minutes into the last term.

But this sparked the Tigers into action as Liam McBean booted his third goal from a set shot 40m out, directly in front having marked on the lead.

With a six-point lead entering time-on, Glenelg forward Jack Yates put a long ball to the top of the goal square which fell over the back into the line of teammate Luke Reynolds, who quickly slammed the ball onto his boot near the goalline.

Yates soon followed up with a vital behind to put his side more than two goals up before Darcy Bailey sealed the result for the visitors with his set shot in the 28th minute.

Covered in so much mud you couldn’t see the No.3 on his back, Snook finished with 27 disposals, six tackles and nine clearances while fellow midfielders Luke Partington (26 disposals, six marks and four tackles) and Brett Turner (19 disposals, five tackles and five clearances) were also important.

Dylan Landt provided plenty of drive off half-back for Glenelg with 27 possessions while co-captains Max Proud and Chris Curran controlled the play in defence, together with the steady Sam Durdin.

The Eagles did well to remain as long in the contest as they did given they lost the final inside 50m count by 34 to 53 as James Tsitas tallied 32 possessions, Jimmy Toumpas 25 and Riley Knight 23 and a goal.

Stengle’s set shot was an example of the hosts making the most of their opportunities as Knight and Zane Williams also slotted difficult goals at critical junctures.

Williams was extremely precise with his candidate for Channel 7 Goal of the Week, kicking truly from 50m from outside the boundary line, featured in the clip below.
