Friday March 1
All SANFL Club venues will be smoke-free and vape-free on all match days and at training sessions from today, March 1.
Under new legislation, which also comes into effect today, smoking and vaping is prohibited in all public areas at and within 10 metres of playing and viewing areas during organised under-18 sporting events, including organised training sessions.
However, the SANFL and SANFL Clubs have made a unified decision to extend these restrictions to a blanket ban for all senior State League and under-age match days and training sessions across SANFL venues.
SANFL CEO Darren Chandler said that in making this decision, SANFL and its Clubs considered how many children and youths also attended and participated in SANFL senior football match days, including activations such as Coles Mini League, and that a family-friendly focus at venues made the decision very easy.
“Based on the new legislation for smoke-free and vape-free outdoor zones, a co-ordinated approach has been taken in extending the ban for all match days and other football events at SANFL venues, beyond just under-18 football activities,” Mr Chandler said.
“Ultimately, we want spectators, parents and all participants attending these venues for footy activities to have an enjoyable experience and to help better protect the community from the harms of passive smoke and vape inhalation.”
The ban will take effect at SANFL match venues from this weekend, with Hostplus SANFL Women’s League matches played tonight and tomorrow, as well as SANFL Under 14 matches tomorrow and Sunday.
The ban applies to the following venues:
Glenelg – Stratarama Stadium
Central District – X-Convenience Oval
North Adelaide – Prospect Oval
Norwood – Coopers Stadium
Port Adelaide – Alberton Oval
South Adelaide – Flinders University Stadium
Sturt – Thomas Farms Oval
West Adelaide – Hisense Stadium
Woodville-West Torrens – Maughan Thiem Kia Oval and Eastern Parade Reserve
In addition, the smoke-free and vape-free zones will apply to all SANFL matches and Talent program activities at Thebarton Oval.
